Drumhorse 1896

The drumhorse in this photo is a piebald, ridden by Private Austen. The photo featured in the Navy & Army Illustrated on 21 Feb 1896 as a full page. The horse is sadly not named but the caption says that it may have been 20 years old and was ‘of Hanoverian descent’ It used to be the drumhorse of the 11th Hussars but was exchanged to the 17th Lancers on their return from India in 1890. The drum banners are blue-black and have the deaths head as a metal badge placed on a padded garter inscribed DEATH OR GLORY. The wreath is half oak and half laurel leaves. The Victorian crown is above the garter and a scroll above the whole design is inscribed 17th D C O LANCERS. An enlargement of the drums is shown below.
