Arthur Cavendish Bentinck


Bentinck was born on 9th May 1819. He purchased his commission and gained promotion to Lieutenant-Colonel on 8th Dec 1854 but had commanded the 7th DG since the previous month when Philip Ainslie retired. He took the regiment to India in October 1857 but on the voyage his wife, Elizabeth Hawkins-Whitshed, gave birth and subsequently died. He relinquished command in September 1858 to return home. The baby son grew up to become the 6th Duke of Portland. Arthur rose to the rank of Lieutenant-General and died on 11th Dec 1877 aged 58. He was buried in the churchyard at St Winifreds in Holbeck, Notts.
