French Victory at Fleurus

The French artist Jean-Baptiste Mauzaisse painted this scene, in 1837, of General Jourdan at the battle of Fleurus, near Charleroi, on 26 June 1794. The British were not involved at this battle, but the Dutch and Austrians were defeated. This signalled the end of the struggle to protect the Netherlands from occupation by France. The picture gives a good idea of the appearance of the Revolutionary French army although highly idealised.
