Major V J Whitla


Major Valentine George Whitla was at first a Midshipman and served aboard HMS Sultan during the Bombardment of Alexandria in 1882, and was with the Naval Brigade ashore. He transferred to the army in 1885 as a lieutenant in the Queen's Bays. He was promoted to captain in 1892. He served with Kitchener's Dongola Expedition in 1896, but in 1898 he transferred to the 3rd Hussars as a major and served with them in the Boer War. He is seen in this 1897 photo in the uniform of the 2nd Dragoon Guards with medals for the Egyptian and Dongola campaigns. He also has a medal for duty at Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897.
