Other Ranks 1719

This detail is taken from a contemporary painting of the battle of Glenshiel which took place on 10 June 1719 when a Hanoverian army commanded by General Wightman defeated Jacobites and Spaniards stranded in the Highlands. The panoramic scene is by Peter Tillemans, painted in 1719, the complete picture is shown below, photographed in August 2023 at Edinburgh Castle.

The detail shows men of the Royal North British Dragoons, as the regiment was titled until 1751 when it was numbered 2nd. They are mounted on grey horses and wear red coats with blue cuffs, and red mitre caps. The belt on the left shoulder is black with a gold or yellow edge. This would support an ammunition pouch but there is no sign of a firearm. They appear to have drawn swords to act as mounted cavalry. Behind them are other mounted troops wearing tricorn hats but otherwise dressed similarly.
