Hautbois 1751

The drummers of each independent Troop were soon joined by two hautbois c1680 who played marching music and could combine with the other Troop hautbois to play as a band. The instrument was like an oboe but was considered the loudest wind instrument except for the trumpet. These musicians were called hoboys and wore similar uniforms to the drummers. This illustration is a reconstruction of a Hautbois of 1751 by Major R B Anderson, of the Scots Greys, which he painted to accompany his article in Tradition, the journal of the International Society of Military Collectors, published c1970.
