The Gordons

Piper, Tirah 1897

The pipers in the Tirah campaign proved their worth, especially during the famous battle on the heights of Dargai. They went into the fight armed only with a sword which remained sheathed as they played the bagpipes to raise the spirits of the highlanders. The distinguishing part of their uniform was the black leather straps on each shoulder attached to a matching waist-belt. The sword was slung from a brown leather shoulder belt and a water-bottle and haversack carried on shoulder straps. This is the uniform that was worn by Piper George Findlater VC.
