The Gordons

After Doornkop

General Hamilton thanks the Gordons for their attack after the battle of Doornkop. Ian Hamilton was an former officer of the regiment and later became their Colonel (1914-1939). They certainly deserved his thanks after he had asked them to face almost certain death with a frontal assault on Boer trenches. The horizontal lines beyond the hills are flames from the dry grass that had been set on fire to blacken the landscape.
