General Hamilton thanks the Gordons for their attack after the battle of Doornkop. Ian Hamilton was an former officer of the regiment and later became their Colonel (1914-1939). They certainly deserved his thanks after he had asked them to face almost certain death with a frontal assault on Boer trenches. The horizontal lines beyond the hills are flames from the dry grass that had been set on fire to blacken the landscape. |
