The Gordons

Jock of the Gordons

The artist Snaffles usually cartooned officers but in 1914 he was inspired to portray the Gordon Highlanders with a stoical old sergeant who with his unruffled attitude sums up the public perception of the regiment as fearless and professional. Jock's face looks as if it was based on that of Drummer Kenny who was the first VC winner of the regiment in Oct 1914.
