The Gordons

Boer Surrender at Paardeberg

The scene of Cronje's surrender painted by Caton Woodville points up the contrast between the diminutive but smartly turned out Lord Roberts and the bear-like, untidy Cronje. The artist has taken some trouble to show that the troops formed up, to ensure that the surrender takes place, are the Gordon Highlanders, as can be seen by the highlander on the left of the picture. They may well have been chosen for this task because the date of the victory, 27th Feb, coincided with the anniversary of Majuba.
