The Gordons

The Somme

The steel helmet was introduced in 1916 which was an improvement on the Glengarry and Tam o'Shanter for trench warfare. Careful study of the photo shows that the men are equipped with picks and shovels which may indicate that they are the 9th Pioneer Battalion but all men serving in the trenches would have had to be involved in a good deal of digging. They do not have sporrans, neither do they have the khaki kilt covers. Two subalterns can be seen sitting in the middle of the group.
