Captain A S Wingate


Captain Alan Sievwright Wingate died of wounds received at Magersfontein on 11th Dec 1899. He was born in Dec 1870 in Glasgow and educated at Loretto School in Musselburgh. He was an athletic youth, excelling at football and cricket. He entered the 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders in March 1891, was promoted to Lieutenant two years later, and Captain in May 1899. He served in the Chitral, Tochi and Tirah Field Forces. The photo shows him wearing medals for the Egypt campaign. The Egypt medal was issued for service between 1882 and 1889, the Khedive's Star was issued from 1882 and 1891.
