Biddulphsberg

Caton Woodville's illustration from Louis Creswicke's book South Africa and the Transvaal War is titled 'Their Ordeal of Fire: The Grenadier Guards at the Battle of Biddulph's Berg'. In the left hand corner the CO, Col Lloyd writhes in pain as young Drummer Haines holds his hand on the wound to stem the flow of blood. A moment later the boy's arm would be smashed by enemy gunfire. The flames of the burning grass can be seen on the right causing dark smoke to hamper the firing of the guardsmen.
