The Colonel's Visit

On 29 June 1918 there was a visit by the Duke of Connaught, who had been the Colonel of the Grenadiers since 1904, to the Third Army HQ at Hesdin. A Guard of Honour was supplied by the 2nd Battalion who were entrenched at Ayette. This detachment was commanded by Captain F A M Browning DSO and they created a great impression because of their smart appearance. 'Onlookers refused to believe that the men had just come out of the line, and maintained that they had been sent out from England for the purpose.' This photo was taken on a previous visit by the Duke, on 1 Nov 1916.
