Private John Leary

Private John Leary joined the Grenadier Guards in 1877, enlisting at Merthyr Tydvil. He served in the Sudan campaign of 1884-5 where each battalion supplied 43 men for the Camel Corps. He has medals for this campaign. The photo was published in the Navy and Army Illustrated 3 April 1896, and is a detail from a picture which shows Leary standing next to the Colours of the 3rd Battalion. He is in guard order and has three white chevrons on his left forearm to indicate his years of long service and good conduct.
