Lieutenant-Colonel A F A N Thorne DSO


Augustus Francis Andrew Nicol Thorne was born in 1885. He went to Eton and Sandhurst and was commissioned into the Grenadier Guards in 1904. In WW1 he held several staff posts before he was appointed CO of the 3rd Battalion of his regiment in 1916. In Sep 1918 he was promoted to Brigadier-General to command 184th Infantry Brigade. After the war he held these posts:

1919 Military attache in Washington DC
1922 General staff, London District
1925 Military assistant to CIGS at the War Office
1927 Commanding Officer of 3rd Battalion for the 2nd time.
1932 Military attache in Berlin
1935 Commander of 1st (Guards) Brigade at Aldershot Command
1936 Brigade Commander in Palestine and Transjordan
1938 Major-General commanding Brigade of Guards
1938 GOC London District
1939 GOC 48th South Midland Division
1940 Important role at Dunkirk
1941 GOC XII Corps
1941 GOC Scottish Command at Edinburgh Castle
1944 Responsible for Fortitude North deception plan
1945 Involvement in the liberation of Norway
1946 Retired with the rank of General. Chairman of Anglo-Norse Society
1970 Died
