This rather severe looking officer was in the Militia before entering the 60th as a lieutenant in 1874. He was adjutant of the 1st Battalion 1877-79. He served in the latter part of the Zulu War, and in the Sudan expedition in 1884 with the 3rd Battalion. He was ADC to Governor Des Vaux in Fiji 1880-83, and Assistant Military Secretary to the Governor of Gibraltar in 1895. He was Commanding Officer of the 4th Battalion from 1898. He is seen here with officers of the battalion just before embarkation to South Africa in 1899.
