1st Battalion Regimental Colour 1902

This image is taken from Players cigarettes cards. By the look of the ER cypher in the centre of the Colour it would appear to date from 1901 when Edward VII came to the throne. This is confirmed by the King's crown. There are 20 battle honours visible which must mean that the honour SOUTH AFRICA 1900-02 awarded to the 4th and 5th Battalions is not on this Regimental Colour of the 1st Battalion . According to 1881 regulations there should no longer be a small Union Jack in the upper corner. There is a gold numeral in the corner for the 1st Battalion and a crowned lion in all four corners. After the First World War another seven honours were added.
