Corporal Thomas Neely VC

On 27th Sept 1918 at Flesquieres in France, when his company, part of the 8th Battalion, was held up by heavy machine-gun fire during the advance, 21 year-old Corporal Neely realising the seriousness of the situation, at once dashed out, under point blank fire, and rushed the gun positions with two others. They captured 3 machine guns. Later on he rushed at concrete strong points, on two occasions, killing or capturing the occupants. His actions enabled his company to advance 3,000 yards along the Hindenberg Line. He was killed three days later on 1st October, holding the rank of Lance-Sergeant.

Neely was born at Seacombe, Wallasey, Cheshire on 28th March 1897. There are memorials to him at Masnieres British Cemetery in France, and The Priory, Lancaster. As well as being a posthumous recipient of the Victoria Cross, he was also awarded the Military Medal.
