Lt-Col E R P Woodgate CB

Edward Woodgate joined as an ensign in 4th Foot on 7th April 1865. He served with the 4th in Abyssinia in 1868. He was on special service in the Ashanti War of 1873-74 and in Zululand in 1879. He was a Brigade major in the West Indies from 1880-85 and was employed in the West Africa Regiment in 1898 fighting insurgents in Sierra Leone.

After commanding the 4th he was promoted to Colonel. When the Boer War started in 1899 he was put in charge of a brigade in Warren's 5th Division, part of Redvers Buller's force to relieve Ladysmith. His brigade was made up of Lancashire regiments including his former regiment, the 4th Royal Lancasters. Woodgate was wounded at Spion Kop and later died, aged 54.

This photo shows him as a Lt-Colonel wearing the uniform of the 4th. The blue collar of his tunic is decorated with gold lace and Russia braid formed into circular loops all along the gold lace. The silver lion badges are placed either side of the collar.
