The Northumberland Fusiliers

Band on the March 1898

The 2nd Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers march out on parade at Portland on St George's Day 1898. The sergeant-drummer leads the Corps of Drums with the band marching behind. The commanding officer, Lieut-Colonel Pennington rides his horse in front of the regiment as it emerges from the tunnel through the earth mound. The sergeant-drummer carries his garlanded mace which is ebony with a heavy silver flat top below which is the ancient badge of St George and the dragon. The mace for the 1st Battalion was all silver. The man in the middle of the front rank of side-drummers has no drum, but instead carries the Drummer's Colour.
