John Granville Harkness


Harkness served as an officer in the 55th Foot throughout the Crimean War. His Crimea medal shows 3 bars for Alma, Inkerman and Sevastopol. The other medals are the Turkish Crimea Medal, the Turkish Order of Medjidjie and the Afghan War medal of 1878-80. He was 2nd Lieut-Colonel in the 1st Battalion in July 1881 before commanding the 2nd Battalion. The photo shows him newly promoted to lieut-colonel in 1881 before the uniform change from green to white facings. He retired with the rank of Major-General.
