The Northumberland Fusiliers

Captain James Jackman VC

In World War 2 the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers were in North Africa at the siege of Tobruk. The British tanks were attacking El Duda ridge on 25th Nov 1941 but the advance was held up by enemy anti-tank guns. Captain Jackman, as calmly as though on manoeuvres, led his machine-gun company to ease the situation on the right flank. Then, standing up in his vehicle, he led the trucks across the front, between the tanks and the guns and got them into action on the left flank. His coolness and complete disregard for danger not only inspired his own men but also the tank crews.

James Joseph Bernard Jackman was born in Dublin on 19th March 1916. He was unfortunately killed the day after he won his Victoria Cross, 26th Nov 1941, aged 25.
