2nd Lieutenant James Johnson VC


This officer, from the 2nd Battalion, was placed in charge of a patrol from the 36th Battalion, in an area south west of Wez Macquart in France. On 14th Oct 1918 his patrol came under frequent attacks which went on for 6 hours. He was at last ordered to retire but he was the last to leave, carrying a wounded man. He returned to the position three more times to retrieve wounded men under intense machine-gun fire.

James Johnson was born at Widdrington Northumberland on 31st Dec 1889. He died in 1943 on 23rd March, at Plymouth.
