The Northumberland Fusiliers

2nd Lieutenant John Scott Youll VC

Youll's action took place in Italy on 15th June 1918, in an area south west of Asiago. John Youll of the 1st Battalion was commanding a patrol which came under heavy fire. He decided to send his men back leaving himself to remain and observe the situation. When he realised that he could not rejoin his company he approached a neighbouring unit and took command of a party of men. They held the position against enemy attack but a machine gun opened fire behind them. Youll rushed it and captured the gun, killing most of the team. He used the gun to inflict heavy casualties on the Germans and carried out three separate counter-attacks to drive the enemy back.

John Scott Youll was born at Thorncroft in County Durham on 6th June 1897. He did not survive the war and died near the River Piave in Italy on 27th October 1918 and was buried at Giavera British Cemetery.
