Lieutenant-Colonel Edward Owen Fisher Hamilton



Edward Hamilton was born in County Kilkenny on 17th Feb 1854. He entered the 1st Battalion Queen's in 1873 and served in the Afghan War of 1878-80. He was ADC to Lieut-General Primrose at the Defence of Kandahar and the sortie from Dehkojah (mentioned in despatches). He was promoted to Captain in 1883 and fought in the Burmah War of 1886 with the 2nd Battalion. His service in India included Cawnpore 18887-8, Punjab and Bengal 1888-93, the Hazara Expedition in 1891 (mentioned again in despatches), Tochi Valley in 1895 and the Malakand Field Force in 1897.

He was second in command of the 1st Battalion in the Malakand and Tirah Expeditions of 1897-8, and took over command of the Battalion in 1898. He was commanding officer during the Boer War until April 1900 when he was promoted to Brigadier-General commanding a brigade. He reached the rank of Lieutenant-General by 1911 and was Colonel of the Regiment from 1914 to 1920.
