Lieutenant Alec George Horwood VC

Alec Horwood, born on 6th Jan 1914 in Deptford, was commissioned into the 1/6th Queen's Royal West Surreys but in 1944 he was attached to the 1st Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment. Whilst serving in Burmah in January 1944 he went into action in Kyauchaw, on the 18th, to help man an observation post for mortar fire. He was exposed to heavy fire from the enemy all day, but came back at night with valuable information about the enemy. The next day he performed a similar task to direct accurate mortar fire in support of two attacks. He also reconnoitered and behaved in a way that drew the enemy fire to him and away from the other men. On the 20th he volunteered to lead an attack, and in the course of this action he was killed.
