Edward Andrew Stuart


Edward Andrew Stuart was born in Canada in1832, the son of Sir James Stuart Bt who held the post of Chief Justice of Lower Canada. He was commissioned as an ensign in the 2nd Battalion, 1st Royal Regiment on 21 May 1852, lieutenant 11 Aug 1854, captain 30 Mar 1858, major 22 Feb 1871, lieutenant-colonel 14 Aug 1876, colonel 1 July 1881. He inherited the baronetcy on the death of his father in 1853.

He spent the whole of his regimental service in the 1st Royal Regiment and fought at the siege of Sevastopol from 22 April 1855. He was severely wounded there on 7 June. He served with the battalion in China, including the capture of Sinho and Tangku, the occupation of Tientsin and the surrender of Peking. He commanded the 2nd Battalion from 14 Aug 1876, until 1881 when he was promoted to colonel and was then put in command of the regimental district for four years. From 13 Mar 1885 he held the post of Major and Lieutenant-Governor of the Royal Hospital, until 1894. He was promoted to major-general in Nov 1890 and appointed Colonel of his old regiment, then called the Royal Scots, on 10 Dec 1897. He died in 1903.

The photo shows him in undress regimental uniform with embroidered crowns on the collar of his patrol jacket to denote the rank of lieutenant-colonel. His forage cap has a gilt, silver and enamelled regimental badge.
