Bombardment of Multan Citadel

After the capture of the city on 2 Jan 1849 the British and Indian artillery spent most of the month bombarding the citadel of Multan from all sides. This print showing the British Indian Force on the northeast side of Multan on 6 Jan, is no.8 of 21 coloured lithographs by Maclure based on drawings by John Dunlop who attended the siege. The title of the print is written in the bottom right corner: ’N.E. side of the fort, showing the British trenches. Jan. 6, 1849’. The figures include British infantrymen, sailors and Sikh allies. The guns and gunners are protected by banks of earth and rock. Smoke rises from a hit on the building just to the left of the domed structure, which hopefully was spared. This set of prints, based on eyewitness drawings, is more convincing than the Henry Martens print of the Storming of Multan.
