Officers’ Dress Jackets c1845

Two photos of similar jackets that cover the period 1840 to 1856 are shown here for comparison. They are both blue, faced red with silver buttons, lace and braid. The photo on the left, is from an auction catalogue which dates the boxed epaulettes as 1830, but is almost certainly wrong. The silver appears yellow in the photo and it is unfortunate that the whirls at the top of the braiding on the back are covered by the sleeve. However, this side view allows us to see the unusual braiding on the collar and the buttons on the cuff, and on the tail. There is one button missing on the tail and it differs from the P W Reynolds illustration in that the false pocket is no longer there.

The buttons down the front have Prince of Wales plume badges as a raised design. The right-hand photo shows two flat buttons at the bottom which were hidden by the gold and crimson girdle. The left-hand jacket has four flat buttons.
