Officer’s Shako 1849 - 1863

The distinctive straight-sided shako had the large Prince of Wales plume badge on the front, a badge that was revived in 1849 when the Cheshire Yeomanry reinstated the name Earl of Chester’s, one of the titles assumed by the heir to the throne. This fine example, in a private collection, retains the gold cap-lines with acorn ends. The peak is heavily embroidered in silver, and the top is laced with a silver oak-leaf pattern. The plume is of black horsehair, but black cocks’ feathers were more usually worn for dress occasions.
