Private, Service Dress 1914

The Earl of Chester’s Yeomanry trained in Norfolk in 1914-15 before being sent to Egypt where they saw active service against the Senussi and the Turks. This uniform is the khaki service dress worn by the regiment in England. The cap badge is the only visible part of the uniform that identifies his unit but he would have had a curved brass badge on his shoulder strap with CHESHIRE and a Y, or T over Y above it. He is wearing spurs and jodhpurs as they remained a horse-mounted regiment. The mounted troops were also identified by the leather bandolier worn on the left shoulder which carried 90 rounds of .303 ammunition for the Lee Enfield rifle.
