Sabretache Badge c1840

This ornate badge that filled the centre of the black leather undress sabretache from c1837 to 1849 is made of copper but silver plated. The cypher is VR for Queen Victoria who came to the throne in 1837. The title of the regiment remained THE KINGS CHESHIRE YEOMANRY and appears on the tri-part scroll at the base of the badge. The Garter is surrounded by a wreath of oak leaves and Victoria’s crown surmounts the whole. In 1849 the title was changed to the Earl of Chester’s and a new badge was designed.
