Cap Badge, Imperial Yeomanry 1900

Badges were not worn on the dress uniform of the Cheshire Yeomanry, but at the outbreak of the Boer War uniforms were less regimental and tended to be plain khaki for active service. The Yeomanry regiments designed their own versions and the Cheshire Yeomanry added red collars, epaulettes and piping. The necessity of a badge to identify them became apparent so the Prince of Wales’s plume was put on the slouch hat and stand collars. The hat badge had the title scroll beneath, with I.Y. added. There are bi-metal versions as well as white metal only types. The Imperial Yeomanry was officially discontinued in 1908 and at around that time the Cheshire Yeomanry reverted to the title Cheshire (Earl of Chester’s) Yeomanry.
