Officer’s Busby, Front and Left Side

Two views of the same busby in a private collection illustrate one way that the silver cap-lines were plaited and draped on the left side. The height of the plume indicates that this is from the later period, as the early busbies, introduced in 1863, had a short egret feather plume. These photos also show the lion head boss which holds the chin-scales, and the oval gimp cockade on the front. An ornate silver plume holder secures the tall white egret feather plume with the red vulture feather base. The short white busby bag is not so clear in these photos but appears to have no silver braid or silver gimp button.
