Cheshire Yeomanry Buttons

The drawings in the top row of buttons are by Denis Darmanin and taken from the Military Historical Society Special Number on Yeomanry Buttons by Howard Ripley (2005) The KCY button (14) dates from 1826, silver, and worn by the King’s Cheshire Yeomanry. The EARL OF CHESTER (15) is a silver ball button and may be from the Stockport Troop which wore hussar uniform in the 1830s. Nos.16 and 17 look similar but 16 is silver, white metal, convex with the design in relief, whereas 17 is described a silver, white metal, gilt, brass and gold anodised, all flat buttons with incised designs.

The lower photos show, on the left, a copper alloy button of the Earl of Chester’s Legion which dates it from 1806. The shape of the button suggests that it was worn by the infantry part of the legion. The inscription around the Prince of Wales plume is, EARL OF CHESTER’S LEGION. The pale blue copper alloy button on the right is of the King’s Cheshire Yeomanry dating between 1826 and 1849.
