Manchester Martyrs

The trial of the Fenians in Manchester began on 28 Oct 1867 in front of two Judges and a grand jury. There were 26 defendants but five principal offenders. The print shows the police horse-drawn van taking the prisoners to court. This was a similar van to the one attacked in September, but this time no chances were taken and, as well as the large police contingent on top of the van there were infantrymen of the 72nd Duke of Albany’s Own Highlanders (later the 1st Seaforths) surrounding the vehicle. Mounted troops can be seen in the background on the left.
