Undress Sabretache 1837 - 1849

The title under the badge is The King’s Cheshire Yeomanry, the name of the regiment from 1826. But the badge had Queen Victoria’s VR cypher so dating it after 1837. In 1849 the regiment was re-named the Earl of Chester’s Yeomanry and displayed the Prince of Wales’s plume in the middle. This specimen is from Bosley’s auction catalogue, and belonged to Wilbraham Egerton who joined the regiment as a cornet at some time in the late 1840s, perhaps even as late as 1849 when this badge would have become redundant as soon as it was purchased. The label on the back of the sabretache has the name of the maker; Hawkes, Moseley & Co of Piccadilly and the ink name of W. Egerton. A dress sabretache of this period has not so far come to light.
