Capture of Hart’s Hill


This drawing was made by an officer named Jones of the Devonshire Regiment and shows the attack on Hart’s Hill on 27 Feb 1900. The East Surreys are labelled on the right, being the nearest to the Boer trenches on the summit. British artillery provided covering fire in the initial stages of the assault. The Rifle Brigade are on the skyline on the left, with the 4th Brigade (not labelled) in the middle. The men in the foreground are from the 2nd Devons who remained in reserve.
