Mounted Infantry Officer

At first sight this officer of the mounted infantry could be mistaken for a private but although he is armed with a rifle and bandolier of ammunition he is indeed an officer. Several months on campaign taught officers to discard the usual sword and revolver. He is equipped with a leather case for maps etc and under his left arm is a tubular case for a telescope. Other ranks had puttees but officers generally had leather gaiters which is what this man appears to have. The horse has a netted bag of feed and a stringed fringe to keep flies off its eyes.
