Map of Spion Kop Area

The prominence rising from the plateau north of the Tugela in the centre of the map is Spion Kop, the scene of the battle on 23-24 Jan. The Lancashire Fusiliers suffered the worst of the casualties. Bastion Hill can be seen at the top of the map, and Trichardt’s Drift where the East Surreys crossed the Tugela is the most westerly of the crossings. Vaal Krantz, where the troops were shelled so heavily on 7 Feb is on the east side of the map.
