Crossing the Tugela

The 2nd Brigade were in Sir Charles Warren’s Division that crossed the Tugela at Trichardt’s Drift in the evening of 18 Jan 1900. Having crossed the pontoon bridge they bivouacked on the other side. After the disaster of Spion Kop the East Surreys were, along with the rest of the army withdrawn across the same bridge in daylight on 27 Jan. Whilst they were on the bridge a Boer shell hit the river close by. They were then ordered to provide cover while the pontoon was demolished.
