Battle of the Boyne

This depiction of the battle was painted by Benjamin West in 1778. It shows King William leading the cavalry across the river as the trumpeters call the charge. The battle brought fame to at least half a dozen regiments of which one was specifically named as the Queen’s Regiment of Horse, led by the gallant Sir John Lanier, and Villier’s 3rd Horse (2DG) who crossed the Boyne immediately under the King’s eye. The dying officer in the right foreground may be the Duke of Schomberg who was the most notable casualty in William’s army. However Schomberg was 75 years old when he was killed.
