Capturing the Drums, Ramillies

The Queen’s Horse are depicted capturing a drumhorse with a young drummer riding a grey horse and carrying drums adorned with embroidered banners. The pale blue banners appear to have fleur-de-lys which would indicate that this horse belonged to the Maison du Roi regiment. But the regimental history claims that the painting depicts the point where the Queen’s Horse met the Bavarian Horse. The Duke of Marlborough looks on from the high ground mounted on his grey charger. The painting is by R Hillingford and hangs in the officer’s mess.
