John Hinde CB


John Hinde was born at Yoxley, Hants on 2 Aug 1814, the eldest son of the Rev John Hinde, vicar of Ludham and headmaster of Ludlow Grammar School in Shropshire where young John was educated. He was commissioned and served 31 years in the King’s Regiment.

Major Hinde was with the regiment at the capture of Delhi on 26 Sep 1857. When Lt-Col Greathed was given command of the infantry brigade in July, Hinde was appointed acting commanding officer of the 8th. The regiment fought at Boolundshuhur and Allyghur. They fought a large force of mutineers at Agra together with other units in Greathed’s column. There was another battle at Dilkoosha and they fought in Sir Colin Campbell’s army at the Relief of Lucknow. Hinde also commanded the 8th at Cawnpore and Khudagunj. He was rewarded with a brevet of lieutenant-colonel, mentioned in despatches and appointed CB. He was officially appointed commanding officer of the 1st Battalion in 1862, retiring in 1866 with the honorary rank of major-general. In retirement he commanded the 1st Warwickshire Rifle Volunteers for 10 years.

On 13 June 1845 he married Frances Gould at Eccles in Lancashire. They had 9 children, 5 sons and four daughters. Major-General John Hinde CB died on 1 March 1881 at the Hermitage, Powick, Worcs. The photo of Lieutenant-Colonel Hinde was taken at Sheffield in 1863 while he was in command of the 1st Battalion, King’s Regiment. He has two visible decorations, the CB and his medal for the Indian Mutiny.
