Captain John Herbert Joseph


John Herbert Joseph was killed in action near Ypres on 31 July 1917. He was 32. Buried at the Zantvoorde British Cemetery. He was commissioned in 1915 and served in the 17th Battalion, King’s Liverpool Regiment. This was the 1st City (Liverpool Pals) Battalion. John Herbert Joseph was the son of Rev J U Joseph MA (Oxon). He was educated at Bedford School and became a commercial traveller based in Liverpool. He was also a Mason, initiated into Downshire Lodge and lived in Grappenhall, Cheshire. At the outbreak of war he enlisted as a private but gained a commission in early 1915. He was promoted to captain in early 1916.
