Middlesex Duke of Cambridge’s Hussars, Yeomanry Cavalry

Lieutenant Archie Langman

Archie L Langman was the treasurer of the Langman Hospital. According to an article in the Times of 7 Feb 1900 the hospital was the brainchild of his father, John L Langman, who put up the money to send the hospital out to South Africa to provide medical care for soldiers serving in the Boer War. It had 100 beds all under canvas, and it was to be located where it was needed most for the military operations. Top surgeons and medical staff, including the author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, were employed and went out with the tents and equipment. It was inspected by the Duke of Cambridge on 21 Feb and shipped out from the Royal Albert Docks on the 23rd. This photo was published in the Illustrated London News on 24 Feb 1900. It shows Lieutenant Archie Langman in the green undress uniform of the Middlesex Hussars.
