Middlesex Duke of Cambridge’s Hussars, Yeomanry Cavalry

Other Ranks 1890

The hussar dress for other ranks of the Middlesex Yeomanry was distinguished by the blue breeches and trousers worn with the green tunic and green stable jacket. Double red stripes followed the outside seam. The tunic had a black velvet collar and cuffs and there were five rows of yellow cord across the chest instead of the usual six. It was fastened in the normal way with hooks and eyes but the five rows of cord were buttoned up with olivets instead of the more usual brass buttons. The busby is depicted in this illustration as brown fur, with a green bag, yellow cap-lines and a green over red horsehair upright plume. The chin chain is very distinct but in other images it is not so clear. This mounted figure has a black sheepskin saddle cover with a rolled blue greatcoat in front of the saddle. His carbine is kept in a bucket holster behind his right leg and his sword is attached to the saddle on the other side.

The two standing figures are the regimental sergeant-major and a private. They are in mounted drill order, wearing green stable jackets and blue breeches. The pill-box cap of the RSM is laced and braided with gold, almost the same pattern as for officers. The private has a red cap-band. Both jackets are fastened with small brass buttons, probably gilt for the RSM, and his jacket is distinguished by having gold braid along the edges, around the cuff and on the side, under the arm. He has a sword and plain black leather sabretache attached to a hidden waist-belt while ranks below him have only a sword. The collar and cuffs of the jacket are of black velvet. All three men wear a white leather pouch-belt over the left shoulder, with a black leather pouch that has a regimental badge on the back. The illustration, painted and published in 1890, is by A Roberson, a sergeant in A Troop.
