Middlesex Duke of Cambridge’s Hussars, Yeomanry Cavalry

Field Day 1897

This print by Richard Simkin was a supplement to the Army & Navy Gazette, Saturday 1 May 1897, titled Military Types no. 113. Simkin is normally a reliable source for military uniforms but he has made some errors in this otherwise useful coloured depiction of the unique uniform. The green tunic with black velvet facings is correct but the yellow cords are fastened with buttons instead of olivets. The officer is distinguished by his tall green plume and his sabretache. His bridle also has a throat plume of green and red. But in this print his breeches are blue with red stripes whereas officers had green breeches with gold stripes.
