Middlesex Duke of Cambridge’s Hussars, Yeomanry Cavalry

Officers in Camp 1897

The regiment would spend eight days every summer, in camp. The officers pose in front of a marquee which probably served as their mess. Although this photo is poorly reproduced it is useful to see the different types of undress uniform on show. Four officers have pill-box caps while the others wear either the Torin cap or the field service cap, the latter was recognisable by the two gilt buttons on the front. The central seated officer is Lt-Col Mitford wearing a blue patrol jacket with wide black lace. A hatless officer standing at the back has a frock-coat. The others mostly appear to be wearing the dark green serge frock which replaced the stable jacket in the mid 1890s. The two officers standing on the left wear dress pouch-belts with the serge frock. A clearer view of this order of dress can be seen on Quartermaster Cattle in the photo of QM Sergeant Jacolette.
